Christopher Columbus bids farewell to the Queen of Spain as he departs for the New World on August 3, 1492.

The New World is a name used for the western hemisphere (America and Oceania). Before the discovery of these regions in the 16th century, people thought that the world consisted of only Africa, Asia and Europe.
