Kicker Rock is a great example of an islet in the Galapagos Archipelago © Galapagos Conservation Trust

An islet is a very small island. If too small for people to live on, then it may simply be called a ‘rock’. Galapagos islets are made of volcanic rock and generally have limited vegetation growing on them. Champion and Gardner are islets off the coast of Floreana and are the only place where the Floreana mockingbird is found. One estimate puts the number of islets in the archipelago at 107.
