Sustainable Tourism
3/5: Principles of Ecotourism

With over 150,000 tourists visiting each year, the Galapagos Islands have become a very attractive holiday destination. What impacts do all these visitors have and how can they continue to visit the islands without destroying them too?

What is Ecotourism?

Ecotourism is a critical part of sustainable development. It is a form of tourism that balances tourist’s wants with the environment needs. It also recognises that tour operators and local people are also important parts of making tourism more sustainable. In places that are environmentally very sensitive or that have unique wildlife, ecotourism is becoming an essential part of visitor management.
