Manuel J Cobos was one of the first businessmen to come to San Cristobal. He had originally set up the Orchillera Company with José Monroy and José Valdizán creating dye from the Orchil moss. However, when this failed, Cobos established the colony El Progreso to cultivate sugar cane.
