Alexander von Humboldt Painted by Joseph Karl Stieler

Alexander von Humboldt was a geographer, naturalist and explorer born in Prussia (modern day Germany). He travelled extensively around South America between 1799 and 1804, describing it for the first time from a modern scientific view point. The Humboldt Current is named after him.
